Coaching Engineers

For engineering design projects with a shortage of senior engineers, an abundance of recent graduates, tough deadlines, and a backlog of challenging work, one-on-one training is available. Someone who has managed departments and capital projects can assist with management training, staff training, and interim management.

OUTSIDE TRAINING EXPERIENCE

As Chairman of the Chlorine Institute’s 2016 Vaporizer design committee, I gave training presentations to members of this international organization in Vaporizer types, operation, and design.

As a Sponsor of the European Ethylene Producers Conference, I trained members of this international organization in the types and features of Process Electric Heaters and in their operation and design. In October 2022, I gave this presentation to 185 members in Marseille, France.

As a member of HTRI, I gave a presentation to HTRI’s Houston Communication Committee on Process Electric Heater types, design, and operation. Some training was provided on crystallizers and vaporizers at the same meeting. This was followed by questions and answers with the approximately 85 heat transfer professionals present.

Onsite training to customers in the operation and maintenance of process systems supplied.

IN-HOUSE TRAINING EXPERIENCE

As a Manager of an Engineering Department, I trained Chemical Engineers freshly graduated from the University.

I coached engineers in the skills needed to design complete process plants for chemical separation based on crystallization and for feed systems using the vaporization of cryogenic ethylene or ambient chlorine. Most of these skills are relevant to a wide variety of plants.

One-on-one training included the calculations and concepts needed for determining total developed head for pumps, NPSHA for pumps, pressure safety valve sizing and selection, source flow for relief, and control valve sizing and selection.

Training of engineers included the following engineering skills:

  • Radiation calculations for high temperature electric heaters
  • Thermosyphon flow and heat transfer calculations
  • Instrumentation selection
  • Turbine sizing and selection
  • Assistance with industry specifications including TEMA, API 660, ASME, Euro Chlor, Chlorine Institute
  • Assistance with Buyer Specifications on Welding, Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, RFI, etc.
  • Programming of National Instrument LabView for R&D
  • Vibration analysis using FFT
  • Reading and writing wiring diagrams
  • Use of HTRI XChanger Suite design software
  • Numerical heat conduction calculations using the finite difference method
  • Solution of multivariable non-linear heat and mass balances using Newton Raphson iteration

Inhouse training covered electric radiant heaters, electric immersion heaters, three types of electric impedance heaters, five types of vaporizers, and crystallizers.
